Today is world stroke awareness day! In the Netherlands more than 30,000 people a year suffer a stroke for the first time.

With stroke it's very important that a person gets care fast, thus it's important that we are all able to recognize a stroke.

For this the acronym F.A.S.T. (in Dutch it's G.A.S.T.; Gezicht, Arm, Spraak en Tijd) has been made:

👉Face drooping: in a stroke it's common for one side of the face to droop or to become numb. This can be seen if you ask the person to smile, the smile will be uneven.
👉Arm weakness: one arm often becomes weak or numb, this can be seen if you ask the person to raise both their arms. Is one of them drifting downward?
👉Speech: this often becomes slurred. The person is often hard to understand or even unable to speak.
👉Time to call 112! It's very important that if you suspect a stroke, that help arrives very quickly!

The Dutch Brain Olympiad is the perfect opportunity to have fun while learning more about the brain. While it’s all about enjoying the experience, we also challenge you to test your knowledge in several rounds.

👉Here’s what to expect:

1️⃣Multiple choice questions: Answer multiple-choice questions to put your brain knowledge to the test.

2️⃣Patient Diagnosis: Step into the role of a doctor and diagnose a patient based on a detailed case description.

3️⃣Brain Anatomy: Participate in a live brain dissection, where you'll learn both theory and practical skills by exploring brain structures up close.

🏆If you rank among the top participants, you’ll advance to the finale to compete for the title of Brain Expert of 2025!

Scientists have recently discovered that certain types of RNA, called noncoding RNAs, don't make proteins but instead control how genes work, deciding when they are turned on or off.
